Stair upgrades

Most stair upgrades keep the original staircase and replace the parts you see and hold: the handrail, newel posts and spindles, and sometimes the treads.

  • New handrails, newel posts and spindles in timber
  • Replacing a boxed-in or panelled balustrade with open spindles
  • Timber cladding over worn treads and risers
  • Tightening loose newels and handrails
  • Quietening creaking treads where we can reach underneath

Timber repairs

Good joinery is often worth saving. We cut out damaged sections and splice in new timber, so the repair disappears once it is painted.

  • Door frames and linings split or damaged by old hinges and locks
  • Interior window boards and sashes that stick or have split
  • Skirting, architraves and dado rails knocked or chewed
  • Worn or split stair treads and nosings
  • Filling, sanding and making good ready for paint

Is it time?

When it is worth calling.

  • The banister wobbles or a newel post moves when you lean on it.
  • Spindles are missing, loose or spaced wider than a child's head.
  • Treads are worn through to bare wood, or creak on every step.
  • A frame, window board or skirting is damaged but the rest is sound.

How it works

From photos to a proper fit.

  1. Look closely

Photos first, then a visit to check what is sound, what is loose and what needs replacing.

  2. Agree the scope

Which parts are repaired, which are new and what timber they are made from, priced in writing.

  3. Repair and fit

New parts fitted, repairs spliced in and everything left solid and ready to finish.

Questions

Worth knowing before you start.

Something else to ask?

Send a photo and a line about the job. Close-ups of any detail you want matched help most.

Ask a question
Do new spindles have to meet any rules?

Yes. Under the Building Regulations guidance for homes, gaps in a balustrade should not let a 100 mm sphere pass through, and handrails are normally set between 900 mm and 1000 mm high. We set out new spindles to suit.

Can you stop my stairs creaking?

Often. Creaks come from treads and risers rubbing. If we can get underneath, gluing and blocking them works well; from above, it depends on how the stairs were built.

Is it worth repairing an old door frame?

If most of it is sound, yes. Splicing in a new section keeps the original profile and is usually quicker than replacing the whole lining.

What about rot?

Rot usually means water is getting in. We can repair or replace the timber, but the cause needs fixing first or the new wood will go the same way.
